Defending champions, Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 34 runs. They now sit at the top of the table with 3 wins in their 5 games. Hyderabad is at the 7th position with just 2 wins in their 5 games

PERFORMERS OF THE DAY

MUMBAI INDIANS Bat: Quinton De Kock 67(39) Krunal Pandya 20(4) Bowl: Trent Boult 4-0-28-2 James Pattinson 4-0-29-2
SUNRISERS HYDERABAD Bat: David Warner 60(44) Bowl: Sandeep Sharma 4-0-41-2

AS IT HAPPENED

Defending champions Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat. Everyone was expecting a Rohit rampage in Sharjah but it was not the case. Rohit got out cheaply as he chased and edged a wide one by Sandeep Sharma. Suryakumar played some exquisite shots but couldn’t capitalize on the start that he got.

De Kock Back In Form
De Kock, prior to this match had scored just 15 runs in his last 3 innings. He played a responsible knock of 67 as he held one end.

Consistency in the Death

MI scored 99 runs from overs 7 to 15. If they were to cross the 200 run mark, they needed some special hitting in the last 5 overs. The trio of Pollard and Pandya brothers made 61 runs in the last 5 overs. In their last two games, they scored 89 each in this phase. Krunal Pandya’s 20 off 4 balls in the last over pushed MI past the 200 run mark.

The Chase

Bairstow started with flair but couldn’t play the innings of longevity that SRH needed. Warner struggled his way to 60 runs. He never looked like timing it, barring the occasional shots. They were in a good position after the powerplay (56/1) but lost their way as no one aided Warner.

Inexperience vs Experience

The experience of Boult, Bumrah and Pattinson proved too much for the inexperienced SRH lower order to handle. Wickets kept tumbling and the game was dead and buried before the 20th over. The MI death bowlers gave just 35 runs in the last 5 overs.

POSITIVES FOR HYDERABAD

In a game where Sid Kaul went for 64 runs in his 4 overs, the only silver lining in their bowling department was T Natarajan. He did not pick any wicket but bowler miserly in a ground built for sixes. He gave away just 29 runs in his 4 overs. Another positive could be Abdul Samad’s ability to strike at the end. He smashed Bumrah for a six, albeit to get out the very next ball. Should he get a hold on his hitting prowess, it’ll be invaluable for SRH.

MUMBAI – 6TH BOWLER SORTED

Rahul Chahar went for 16 in his first over. Captain Rohit then turned to Kieron Pollard to give him 3 overs and he delivered. He gave just 20 runs in his 3 overs, including 1 over in the death (20th over). In the absence of Hardik Pandya with the ball, the 6th bowler isn’t giving MI too much of a tough time.
