Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first. This was coming because it has been very difficult chasing at the Chepauk in Chennai. There was one team change for MI as they played Adam Milne in place of Marco Jensen. SRH made as many as 4 changes in their team with Jason Holder missing out and Mujeeb ur Rehman coming in.
Rohit and de Kock share a fifty run opening partnership, set the tone for the innings
The MI openers were very formidable and confident, especially Rohit Sharma. They put on 55 for the 1st wicket. But after Rohit was dismissed, there were not many runs scored in the middle overs. Ishan Kishan struggled for runs and Quinton de Kock also was not able to find boundaries.
But then came Keiron Pollard and completely changed the momentum towards Mumbai. He scored a quickfire 35 off just 22 balls. This helped MI reach 150, which was going to be a difficult chase considering the slowness of the pitch.
SRH openers made runs, but their middle order woes continue
SRH began the chase very well. Jonny Bairstow was especially very good in the powerplay. He stormed his way to 43 off just 22 balls. SRH lost their wicket at 67 when they were quite comfortably placed. BUt as always happens in Chennai, middle overs batting became tough.
SRH were not helped by the fact they 2 batsmen were runout, both through direct hits by Hardik Pandya. Ultimately SRH fell well short of the target as they were all out for 137 runs. Mumbai Indians win by 13 runs.
The man of the match was Keiron Pollard for his match-defining innings of 35 off just 22 balls. Those crucial runs in the end meant a lot in the context of the match. He hit 1 four and 3 sixes in his knock. He also bowled 2 economical overs wherein he gave just 10 runs.
