South African batsman struggle to score big on a sluggish track

The 2nd match of the series between England and South Africa was being played on a slow track at Paarl. The commentators mentioned that it might turn out to be a low scoring encounter after reading the pitch. England skipper Eoin Morgan won the toss and opted to bowl first. South Africa had a rather speedy start as openers Bavuma 13(10) and De Kock 30(18) got off to a flyer. But both openers got dismissed by the end of powerplay. As a result South African middle order batsman struggled to score quickly in the middle overs. Reeza Hendricks 16(18, Du plessis 11(11), Van der Dussen 25(29) all struggled to up the run rate.

But a few boundries from George Linde 29(20) helped South Africa finish at 146/6. It was still a decent score for a low scoring encounter. For England Adil Rashid picked 2/23.

Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan take the game away from South Africa

Chasing 147 England too had a decent start. Openers Jason Roy 14(19) and Jos Buttler 22(15) both got starts but didn’t last long. Jonny Bairstow the hero of the previous match too perished early as he got out to Shamsi. Dawid Malan and Ben stokes joined in and started scoring at a steady rate. But Ben stokes too got out to Shamsi in the 13th over. Shamsi’s excellent spell had given South Africa the upper hand in the innings. But Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan had other plans.

Both started attacking the proteas bowlers and took the game away from them. Dawid Malan played a tremendous inning of 55(40) but couldn’t stay till the end. Skipper Eoin Morgan played sensible cricket by looking for odd boundries in his innings of 26(17). England eventually chased the target with a ball to spare. And they clinched the series by 2-0 with a game to go. For South Africa Shamsi was the superstar with the ball with figures of 3/19.
