KKR vs RCB Match Highlights As It Happened
KKR won the toss and chose to bat first. The decision proved to be a horror one. KKR lost wickets left, right and center and never really got going. At one point, it seemed like KKR would break RCB’s record of lowest runs in an innings ever (49 in 2017).
Siraj Storm hit KKR and hit them hard. He bowled back to back maiden overs. Here’s how his first 2 overs went: 0, 0, W, W, 0, 0, 1LB, 0, W, 0, 0, 0. It’s the first time a bowler has bowled 2 maidens in a match. To top off Siraj’s storm, Saini too chipped in by getting the wicket of Shubman Gill. KKR were 17-4 after the powerplay, the lowest score by a team in the power play
this year.
Spin Kills Hopes of Revival
If after the powerplay, KKR had any hope of revival, RCB’s spin attack killed those too. Chahal got out Karthik which left Morgan to work with the tail. Chahal and Sundar gave just 29 runs in their combined 8 overs and took 3 wickets. Morgan scored a valiant 30 but it still couldn’t save KKR from making their lowest ever IPL score i.e. 84/8. This is also the lowest score by a team in IPL . Probably at the halfway mark, RCB was calculating the net run rate they would want to achieve in the chase.
With just 85 to chase from 20 overs, there was no need of any risk by the batsmen. Both Finch and Padikkal were playing the ones and twos and scoring the odd boundary off a bad ball. They lost a couple of wickets on their way upto 85 but they finished the match with 39 balls to spare.
KKR’s Defensive Bowling Approach
KKR adopted a surprise defensive approach in their bowling. Lockie Ferguson bowled in his first over in the 7th over. With the pace that he has, and the assistance the pitch provided, it would have been a fair call to give him that new ball and see if something happened. A few quick wickets at the top could surely have had RCB break a sweat or two.
RCB jumps to the 2nd position in the points table with 7 wins in 10 games. KKR’s loss means that the 4th position is up for grabs and surely Punjab and Rajasthan are in contention for that spot.
