AS IT HAPPENED
SRH won the toss and chose to field first. The decision was a tricky one as teams batting first are winning a majority of the games with the pitches slowing up as the match progresses. KKR started off decently in the powerplay. Gill smashed and Tripathi managed 48 runs in the powerplay. Tripathi got out on the last ball of the powerplay, failing to strike against a length ball into the stumps. KKR is now the only team this season to not have 50+ runs in the powerplay.
Gill’s Tough Times Continue
Shubman Gill made 36 runs in 37 balls. Surprisingly, he hit 5 boundaries, which means that he struggled to rotate strike and swallowed dot deliveries. It was Gill’s second consecutive innings where he could not maintain a strike rate of over 100.
Even though Gill and Rana scored runs, iit came at a pretty slow rate. As a result, KKR managed just 57 runs from overs 7 to 15.
Karthik, the ex-captain, provided some much needed momentum at the end. He scored 29 off 14 balls and was aided well by Morgan’s 34 off 23 balls. KKR finished on 163-5. KKR were 15-20 runs short. They missed Russell’s muscle which seems like a lost treasure this year.
New Opener for SRH
The new opener for SRH today was Williamson who opened in place of David Warner. Williamson had a hamstring niggle which was probably why he was sent in the power play to make use of the fielding restrictions with his restricted abilities. Williamson came good today and scored quick 29 runs off 19 balls. Bairstow played with a similar strike rate as SRH looked comfortable after the powerplay. They were 58-0.
Ferguson on Fire!
Lockie Ferguson was on fire today in Abu Dhabi. He was playing his first game for KKR this season and he made sure that he made a difference. He got rid of his Kiwi skipper, Williamson on the first ball that he bowled. In his next over, he took out Priyam Garg, followed by Manish Pandey in the next over. He split SRH’s middle order in half and got his team back into the game. He bowled with an economy of 3.75 RPO!
SRH fall one short in the last over
SRH needed 17 runs of the last over. Credit to them that they managed to get so close in the first place because of Warner and Samad’s efforts otherwise the match looked long gone for the orange army. An injured Russell was bowling the last over. Warner hit 3 connections fours but SRH matched KKR’s total. They fell one short of a victory that should have been theirs. The match went into a Super Over, KKR Won in Close Game .
The Super Over Drama
SRH batted first in the super over. Ferguson had the ball in hand and he ensured that his four overs in the game weren’t a waste. He took out Warner on the first ball and Samad on the third to bag a total of 5 wickets in the game. KKR needed just 3 to win the match, which they did without any fuss. It was a frustrating loss for SRH and a delightful win for KKR as they now look comfortably seated in the Top 4.
